What Is the DiSC Model?

DiSC is a research-backed model of human behaviour that describes how people tend to approach tasks, interact with others, and respond to challenges and constraints. The model was first developed by psychologist William Moulton Marston in the 1920s and has since been refined into the Everything DiSC® suite of assessments, published by Wiley. Today, more than one million people complete a DiSC assessment every year.

Rather than trying to explain all human complexity, DiSC focuses on observable behavioural tendencies — particularly in workplace contexts. It is not designed to measure intelligence, mental health or values. It is a practical tool for improving self-awareness and professional relationships.

What if people had their needs written all over them? If you knew that this person wanted more independence and that person wanted a bit more reassurance, would it change the way you work together? Would it make your job easier? Yes, it probably would. But that’s not the real world. Or is it? Maybe if you had the right decoder, everyone’s needs would be a lot more obvious. It would be clear how to work more effectively together, to be more productive, more satisfied.

All you would need is a tool to help you understand where people are coming from. This is DiSC, your decoder. It gives you a way to quickly understand the needs and priorities of the people around you. It describes four basic styles: D, i, S and C. Here’s how it works. First, everyone has a dot. The dot tells you your DiSC style.

If you have a D or Dominance style, you probably drive towards results, insist on immediate action and challenge the status quo. Most likely, other people with the D style share your priorities. Even though you might butt heads from time to time, different styles may find this same D approach to be blunt, intimidating or insensitive.

If you have an i or Influence style, you probably approach work with enthusiasm, enjoy collaboration and take quick action. Others with the i style probably find your energy exciting, even if the two of you are a little too optimistic at times. Different styles may find this sort of liveliness and fast pace to be sloppy or reckless.

Or you may have an S or Steadiness style, which means you like to support people, maintain stability and enjoy collaboration. People with the S style will probably appreciate your patient and easygoing nature, even if that means there’s little sense of urgency. Different styles might see you as overly accommodating or indecisive.

Finally, if you have a C or Conscientiousness style, you probably focus on accuracy, use your logic to challenge ideas and seek stability to ensure consistent outcomes. Others with the C style will like that you prioritise getting things right, even if the two of you can get bogged down in analysis. But for people of different styles, this conscientious pace may feel dry, sapping their natural energy.

Now in the real world, it’s not always that simple. Your dot can be between two styles, such as in the area between i and S, and you can have four or even five priorities. For example, in addition to collaboration, enthusiasm and support, you might also share the priority of accuracy with your C co-workers.

The point is, even though you need to recognise your own DiSC style, you also need to know where the people you work with are coming from. Whether you’re simply connecting with others, solving problems, or working through conflict, you’ll have to stretch from time to time. And using DiSC as a guide, you have a better sense of what, when and why that sort of adapting is so crucial — not only to your success but the success of everyone in your workplace.

The Four DiSC Styles

DiSC groups behavioural tendencies into four primary styles. Most people have a blend of styles, but tend to be more naturally comfortable in one or two areas. The DiSC circle maps these styles and shows how they relate to each other.

Dominance (D)

D styles tend to be direct, results-oriented, firm, strong-willed, and forceful. They are driven by a desire for results and tend to challenge the status quo. Under pressure, D styles can come across as demanding or impatient. At their best, they are decisive, confident drivers of change.

Key priorities: Results, action, challenge, directness.

Influence (i)

i styles tend to be enthusiastic, optimistic, open, trusting, and energetic. They are driven by a desire for connection and influence. Under pressure, i styles can be seen as disorganised or impulsive. At their best, they are inspiring, collaborative and persuasive communicators.

Key priorities: Enthusiasm, collaboration, action, relationships.

Steadiness (S)

S styles tend to be even-tempered, accommodating, patient, humble, and tactful. They are driven by a desire for stability and collaboration. Under pressure, S styles can be overly accommodating or resistant to change. At their best, they are loyal, supportive, and excellent at building trust.

Key priorities: Support, stability, collaboration, reliability.

Conscientiousness (C)

C styles tend to be analytical, reserved, precise, private, and systematic. They are driven by a desire for quality, accuracy, and competence. Under pressure, C styles can over-analyse or be overly critical. At their best, they produce high-quality, well-reasoned work.

Key priorities: Accuracy, stability, challenge, quality.

What Makes Everything DiSC Different?

Everything DiSC is not a simple "which box am I?" test. The assessment uses adaptive testing technology, which means the questions you are presented with are personalised based on your earlier responses — resulting in a more accurate and nuanced profile than traditional fixed-question assessments.

Your profile is not just a label. Rather than placing you firmly in one of four boxes, Everything DiSC represents your style as a dot on the DiSC map — showing not just your primary style but the specific intensity and nuance of your tendencies. Two people with the same primary style can have very different profiles.

The research behind Everything DiSC is rigorous and ongoing. The assessments are developed and continuously validated by Wiley's research team, with data from millions of respondents worldwide.

How Everything DiSC Profiles Work

  1. You complete a 20-minute online self-assessment — responding to a series of statements about your workplace behaviour preferences.
  2. The adaptive testing engine generates your personalised profile, identifying your primary DiSC style and the specific nuances within it.
  3. Your results are compiled into a personalised report (PDF or online platform, depending on the product) — typically 20–27 pages of individually tailored content.
  4. The report explains your style, your workplace priorities, what motivates and stresses you, and provides strategies for working more effectively with people of every DiSC style.

Frequently Asked Questions

DiSC is a behavioural assessment, not a personality test. It measures observable workplace behavioural tendencies rather than deep personality traits or values. It is not diagnostic and does not measure intelligence or mental health.

Your core DiSC style tends to be relatively stable, but your behaviour can adapt to different contexts and pressures. Many people find that their results shift slightly if they retake the assessment years later, particularly if they have been in a significantly different work environment or life stage.

Yes. Everything DiSC assessments are developed and continuously validated by Wiley's research team using established psychometric methods. The assessments have been tested with millions of respondents worldwide and meet accepted standards for reliability and validity.

No. Individuals can complete the assessment and read their personalised report independently. A facilitator can add significant value when using DiSC with teams, particularly in workshops, debrief sessions or culture-change programmes. Learn more about facilitated DiSC sessions.

Free DISC tests online vary widely in quality and are not the same as the official Everything DiSC® assessments published by Wiley. Everything DiSC uses adaptive testing technology, produces fully personalised reports, and is backed by rigorous ongoing research. Free tests may give you a rough indication of your style but are not the same product.
