Team Development or Personal Development

The Five Behaviors®: Team Development or Personal Development – which do you need?

Both are official Five Behaviours profiles built on Trust, Conflict, Commitment, Accountability and Results. The deciding question is simple: are you assessing one intact team together, or individuals who don't all work on the same team?

Two colleagues reviewing something together on a tablet

Quick answer

Choose Team Development if the participants form an intact team that works towards shared goals and you want to understand how they work together as a team.

Choose Personal Development if participants come from different teams, form a learning cohort or want to apply the five behaviours across different working relationships.

Decision guide

Which profile fits your situation?

Find the situation closest to yours. What matters is how the participants work together – not how many profiles you need or who is placing the order.

You lead an intact team

You and your team already work together towards shared goals – a leadership team, a management team or any team with shared responsibility for results – and you want to build greater trust, alignment and collective effectiveness.

Recommended: Team Development

It gives each person individual insight and adds a shared, team-level view of trust, conflict, commitment, accountability and results.

See Team Development

HR or L&D buying for one intact team

You’re arranging profiles for a team you don’t belong to – for example a leadership team or a project team whose members work together day to day.

Recommended: Team Development

The choice depends on how the participants work together, not on who places the order. If they’re one intact team, they get the team-level results. Buying for several teams? Order each team separately.

See Team Development

A mixed development cohort

You’re buying for people from different teams, functions or locations – a leadership programme, a high-potential group or an onboarding cohort.

Recommended: Personal Development

They don’t share one team, so a combined team diagnosis wouldn’t describe anything real. Three or more unrelated people don’t become a Team Development group because of the number of profiles.

See Personal Development

Individual development

You want to develop your own teamwork – or one or two colleagues’ – across the different teams and working relationships you’re part of.

Recommended: Personal Development

It focuses on the individual’s teamwork skills, and the insight stays useful wherever they work next.

Still weighing it up? Ask yourself

Do you need to see how the group works collectively, not just as individuals?
Only Team Development combines everyone's answers into team-level results – and that only makes sense when the participants are one real team.
Does the insight need to travel with the person to another team or role?
Personal Development focuses on the individual's teamwork across relationships, so it stays relevant wherever they work. Team Development's team-level results describe one team at one point in time.
Is anyone in the group only loosely connected to the others?
If some people rarely work together, a team diagnosis would blur the picture. Consider Personal Development for them, or split them into the real teams they belong to.

Not a clear fit?

Some situations need a quick conversation – for example a team that's about to change shape, new members joining a team that has already been assessed, or a programme that mixes intact teams with individuals. Our minimum order for new Team Development orders is a purchase rule, not a judgement about every future situation, so ask us before ordering and we'll suggest the right route.

How do Team Development and Personal Development compare?

Whether you've been searching for a Five Behaviours assessment or know The Five Behaviours by name, the two profiles use the same underlying model – Trust, Conflict, Commitment, Accountability and Results – but they're built for different situations. Here are the exact differences.

The Five Behaviours Team Development and Personal Development compared
Feature Team Development Personal Development
Participant relationship Members of one intact team who already work together towards shared goals Individuals – may come from different teams, functions or organisations
Team-level results Yes – combined team-level results alongside each person's individual insight No – personalised individual insight only; there's no combined team diagnosis
DiSC® Shows each participant their own DiSC® style and the styles of others in the team, and how the styles affect the team Feedback is personalised using the Everything DiSC® assessment, but participants aren't taught the DiSC model or told their style
Report Personalised profile, the team's results across the five behaviours, and discussion and action-planning content Personalised profile applying Trust, Conflict, Commitment, Accountability and Results to the individual's own working relationships
Comparison Reports Available for any two people who have a Five Behaviours Team Development or Personal Development profile – no Everything DiSC® assessment is needed. Ask us if you'd like one.
Portability Individual insight goes with the person; the team-level results describe that team at that time Focused on the individual, so the insight stays relevant wherever they work next
Group size Wiley recommends intact teams of around 5–12 people who have worked together for at least six weeks Flexible – one person, or a cohort of any size
Minimum order 3 profiles 1 profile

Know The Five Dysfunctions of a Team?

Both profiles apply the teamwork model from Patrick Lencioni's bestselling book, turning its five dysfunctions into five behaviours a team or an individual can work on. See how the book connects to these profiles.

Questions about choosing a profile

Can I buy Team Development for fewer than three people?

New Team Development orders start at 3 profiles – that’s our minimum order, because the team-level results are built from several members’ answers. It isn’t Wiley’s team-size guidance: Wiley recommends Team Development for intact teams of around 5–12 people. If you’re buying for one or two people as individuals, Personal Development (minimum 1) is the better fit. Adding a new member to a team that has already been assessed is a different situation – ask us before ordering.

If I’m buying for three or more people, should I choose Team Development?

Not automatically. Team Development is for people who work together as one intact team with shared goals. Three or more people from different teams don’t become a team because of the number of profiles – their combined results wouldn’t describe a real team. For a mixed group, choose Personal Development.

Do Team Development and Personal Development use the same model and DiSC?

Both are built on the same five behaviours – Trust, Conflict, Commitment, Accountability and Results – and both personalise the feedback using the Everything DiSC® model. They present it differently. Team Development shows each participant their own DiSC® style and the styles of others in the team. Personal Development uses DiSC-derived personalisation behind the scenes, but doesn’t teach the DiSC model or tell participants their style.

Can two people compare their results?

Yes. A Five Behaviours Comparison Report looks at how two people can work together more effectively. It can be created for any two people who have a Five Behaviours Team Development or Personal Development profile – you don’t need an Everything DiSC® assessment. Ask us if you’d like one.

Do I need a facilitator for either profile?

No. Both profiles can be bought and used without facilitation. If you’d like help turning the results into a productive team conversation, facilitated sessions are available separately.

Can I order Team and Personal Development together?

They’re priced and checked out separately, so if you need both – for example Team Development for a leadership team and Personal Development for individuals elsewhere in the organisation – place one order for each. If you’re unsure how to split your numbers, email us before you buy.

What if I order the wrong profile?

Contact us before you register any participants. As long as assessment access hasn’t been issued, we can usually switch your order to the other profile and adjust the price. See our refund policy for the details.

Can I see a sample report before choosing?

Still unsure? Ask us before ordering.

If your situation doesn't fit neatly into the decision guide – for example a team that's about to change shape, or a mix of intact teams and individuals – just ask us before you order. We'll help you pick the right profile and quantity.

If you purchase the wrong profile and the assessment links have not yet been issued, we will change your order and adjust the price.
